Skegness Grammar School take Silver at DRET Winter Cup 2015

Students from Skegness Grammar School are celebrating after winning second place at the David Ross Education Trust’s Winter Cup 2015.

The event, which was held at the University of Nottingham, brought together nearly 1,000 students from across the Trust’s secondary academies to compete in football and netball tournaments in a mission to win the coveted Winter Cup.

After securing victories in Year 10 football and Year 11 netball, the SGS team also won silver in Year 7 netball and Year 8 football, and bronze in Year 11 football.

Players of the tournament were awarded to Tarne Cooper, Year 7, who was commended for her outstanding performance and team spirit, and James Cowell, Year 10, who scored a winning penalty for his team.

Shane Ward, Sports Enrichment Manager for the David Ross Education Trust, said: “I have been so impressed with the level of sportsmanship at this year’s DRET Winter Cup.

"Every single one of our students gave 100%, working together as a team and competing with pride for their academies."

The day was also attended by former England international footballer Sue Smith and football freestyler Dan Magness as well as three Loughborough Lightning players, who cheered the players on and gave them advice on their techniques.

Wendy Marshall, Chief Executive of the Trust, added: "The Winter Cup has been another huge success. It was fantastic to welcome our newest academies to the competition, and to celebrate the sporting talent across our Trust. Well done to all who took part!”
